Drake Says KOTD & Battle Rap Are Growing, Explains Absence From "WD4"

Drake talks about King of the Dot's "World Domination 4" and says that the Battle Rap scene is growing.

Although Drake's OVO sponsored King of the Dot's "World Domination 4," the Toronto emcee was unable to attend the Battle Rap event in Canada. Instead, Drake attended MTV's Video Music Awards in Brooklyn, New York. Drake took a moment to explain his absence from the event in a video released by KOTD.
"It's killing me that I'm stuck in New York right now, rehearsing for VMAs," Drake said in the clip. "I've been watching the pay-per-view on live stream. Me and Organik spent so much time going back-and-forth on the phone trying to piece these battles together. Some of these battles are like dream battles that I wish I was there to see in person."
After lamenting his absence, Drake also took time to share gratitude for others who made the event possible.
"Thank you to everybody that came out to battle," Drake said. "The scene is getting so much bigger. King of the Dot is getting so much bigger. Thank you to the fans who showed up to the event and everybody watching online. Shout out to Organik. Shout out to Gully. Shout out to Lush One, my dog. Shout out to everyone who makes this possible."
The three-day event, which is still available for pay-per-view streaming, was recapped by Lush One in two exclusives to HipHopDX. Lush discussed various battles from the event, including DNA versus Charron, Dizaster versus Arsonal and Pat Stay versus Arcane.
Drake also tweeted about the event as it was taking place, on Sunday (August 25). 

Joey Bada$$ Says Touring With Wiz Khalifa & A$AP Rocky Was "Humbling"

Joey Bada$$, who was recently on tour with Wiz Khalifa and A$AP Rocky as part of their "Under the Influence of Music Tour," spoke about what he learned from the run.
"It's been an eye opener," Bada$$ said of the tour in an interview with KarmaloopTV. "It's a really humbling experience in a way as well, as much as it is an honor and an opportunity of a lifetime. But at the same time, when I come out every night, I just realize how much I got to work harder, how much I just got to get my shit up on a whole 'nother level."
Bada$$ will likely use what he's learned from the tour on his upcoming run with Ab-Soul and others as part of "The Smokers Club Tour." The tour, which was announced this week, will run from October through November.
Aside from heading on tour with Ab-Soul, there are other changes that may be on the horizon for Joey. According to Bada$$, the rapper may experiment with other musical genres in the future.
"I always imagine just experimenting in that field more," Bada$$ said of a potential Reggae-inspired project. "It's definitely in the future, definitely."

Twerk Added To Britain's Oxford Dictionary

The word "twerk" has been added to Britain's Oxford Dictionary as a verb following recent headlines regarding Juicy J and Miley Cyrus.

Twerk has been added to Britain's Oxford Dictionary as a verb. Oxford Dictionary's Katherine Connor Martin recently addressed the origin of the word, which has been used in music for years.  

"There are many theories about the origin of this word, and since it arose in oral use, we may never know the answer for sure," Martin said to the Associated Press. "We think the most likely theory is that it is an alteration of work, because that word has a history of being used in similar ways, with dancers being encouraged to 'work it.' The 't' could be a result of blending with another word such as twist or twitch."

Twerk will be added to the dictionary along with selfie, digital detox and Bitocoin.

The definition, according to AP, is to "dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance."

Twerking has been in the news of late for several reasons. This month, Juicy J offered a $50,000 scholarship for the best student who can twerk and Miley Cyrus made headlines after twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards. Juicy J also crowned Cyrus "the best twerker hands down" following the performance, which can be seen below.

Kendrick Lamar Explains "Control" Lyrics, "King Of New York" Line

Kendrick Lamar spoke with Los Angeles radio station Power 106 about his performance on Big Sean's "Control" and how he wants to "leave a mark as great as Biggie, as great as Pac."

Kendrick Lamar says that he was not aware that his verse on Big Sean’s “Control” would generate the amount of interest it did when it was released earlier this month.
"Honestly I didn't know it would be so much speculation behind it,” Kendrick Lamar says during an interview with Los Angeles radio station Power 106. “I just wanted to rap. If anybody knows me doing music, I wanna just rap."
In addition to saying on “Control” that he was trying to murder J. Cole, Drake, Big Sean and a host of other rappers, he also referred to himself as a descendant of late rapper Tupac Shakur.
"I'm Makaveli's offspring," Lamar raps on "Control," likely referring to Tupac Shakur's 1996 release as Makaveli, The Don Killuminati (The 7 Day Theory). "I'm the King of New York, King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both."
Several New York rappers, including Raekwon and Papoose, said that Kendrick Lamar’s claim was unwarranted.
During his Power 106 interview, Kendrick Lamar says that the "King Of New York" lyric was misinterpreted.
“The irony of that line is that the people that actually understood it and got it was the actual kings of New York,” Kendrick Lamar says. “Me sitting down with them this past week, and them understanding that it's not about actually being the King of whatever Coast. It's about leaving a mark as great as Biggie, as great as Pac."

Pusha T's "My Name Is My Name" release date moved from hot Summer to cool Fall.

Earlier this week, Pusha T revealed that his solo debut on G.O.O.D. Music would be titled My Name is My Name.

In a recent interview with HipHopSince1987, Pusha explained his title choice. "Basically, I was trying to pick a title that embodied who I am as an artist...and I wanted people to understand that Pusha is everything that I really, really am."

Pusha elaborated on the source of inspiration for his album title. "Actually, it's a line in 'Pain' where I actually say 'My name is my name.' And of course, that line comes from Marlo Stanfield in the series 'The Wire.' It's one of the more prominent catch phrases he said during the end of that series."

Skillz makes note of the surplus of Twitter responses Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse received, says that's the "problem" with today's rappers.

In the days following the release of Big Sean’s “Control”and the praise surrounding TDE wordsmith Kendrick Lamar’s verse on the record, numerous emcees have come forward to express their thoughts on the record, whether it be through a handful of Tweets or with a response record of their own.

Despite the plethora of responses Kendrick’s verse has garnered, Drake, who is called out by name on the song, has yet to issue a lyrical reply. And in the wake of “Control’s” release, Virginia rapster Skillz offered a few words of advice to the Young Money artist who he feels should respond when he’s on the verge of releasing his next studio album, Nothing Was The Same.

“Kendrick and Drake, they both can rap they ass off…I’m waiting to hear what Drake gotta say and I like the fact that he ain’t say nothing yet, but I know he gon’ say something,” said Skillz. “He got an album coming out. It would be smart of him to do it right before his shit ‘bout to drop. It ain’t really a marketing stunt if you said my name first. I’mma say your name when it makes perfect sense for me to say it."

Snoop Dogg To Host 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards, Nominees Announced

Yesterday (August 22), the BET network confirmed that Hip Hop superstar and media mogul Snoop Dogg will host the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The event will premiere on October 15 at 8pm EST. Snoop follows another artist, T-Pain, who hosted along with Mike Epps and Katt Williams.

Drake reveals the official artwork for his upcoming "Nothing Was The Same" album.

 After the news broke earlier today that Drake's album, Nothing Was The Same, has been pushed back a week, Drizzy decided to treat fans tonight by releasing the official artwork to the upcoming project.

Taking to his twitter account Wednesday night, Drizzy revealed the album's official artwork, along with a second cover, believing to be for the deluxe edition. The highly anticipated album is now set for a September 24th release date, and is said to feature Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Hudson Mohawke, and more. His new single, "Hold On We're Going Home", is steadily climbing the charts. 

A New Orleans jazz group has filed a lawsuit against T Pain, DJ Khaled, and more for over $100 million.

The Batiste Brothers, a legendary New Orleans jazz group has issued a lawsuit against DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Ace Hood, T-Pain, Pitbull and Cash Money for an astonishing $100 million (eight zeros) for using their music, and lyrics in countless songs. 

While the names are not limited to the artists above, the lawsuit filed by Paul Batiste is a staggering 118 pages and claims, “an immense number of songs infringing upon Plaintif’s catalog.”  Some popular songs named in the lawsuit include T-Pain’s “Blame It” and “Booty Wurk” as well as Khaled’s wildly successful “All I Do Is Win.”  

Seeking $100,000,000 in damages, the lawsuit says, “Defendants have blatantly poached beats, lyrics, melodies and chords from Plaintiff’s songs.”

Curren$y says he missed Wiz Khalifa's wedding because he was too stoned.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose finally tied the knot at the beginning of the week. As we all saw, Amber Rose celebrated the night before the big day by twerking in her wedding dress. Wiz Khalifa was undoubtedly smoking. 

One of Wiz's frequent collaborators and fellow weed advocate, Curren$y, missed out on the wedding ceremonies though, because his favorite substance hindered him. Marijuana is known to make you forgetful, and thusCurren$y completely blanked on his friend's wedding.

While talking to TMZ, Spitta revealed, "I wanna say congrats to Wiz on his wedding. We were totally like baked and I totally just smoked off my appearance."

Kendrick Lamar leads the BET AWARDS with most nominations

You can't escape Kendrick Lamar in hip-hop at this point in time. After claiming to be the King of New York on Big Sean's "Control" and name-dropping a bunch of his colleagues, thus getting the rap world in a tizzy, he continues his domination with the upcoming BET Hip-Hop Awards.

The West Coast native leads the nominations this year with 14, among them, Lyricist of the Year, Album of the Year, MVP of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Video for "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe." Following the announcement, K. Dot said of the awards, "It’s a privilege to be a part of it. For the most part, BET always acknowledges my talent and I always hold that as an honor, so I’m blessed."
